Summer on the Farm
Wow.
I started this year strong with a new post every month. But the summer months got away from me and here we are in August with not a single post to show for it.
Summer has been… a lot.
On the family side we have filled our summer with play dates and homeschooling (we work on a year round calendar). Whenever possible we’ve been in water; be it a lake, a pool, or a splash pad.
We also found a dog on the side of the road we’ve been caring for and our barn cat, Honey, has had not one but TWO litters of kittens this year.
New for us this year has been prioritizing “family fun days” where the whole family embarks on an adventure together.
Family fun days have to be scheduled because the farm side of our “family farm” is more than a full time job.
We have raised and processed 750 chickens so far this year (with 150 more in our pasture and 150 arriving mid-September).
Kenneth harvested about 1,000 pounds of honey to be extracted and bottled.
The hives require weekly management for a variety of reasons and with 75 hives on 6 bee yards, there is a lot of driving involved!
And our Honey House renovation is ongoing! We had a brief pause to host our flower arranging class with Sara of Jackson Creek Farm and to work through the spring honey harvest.
But Kenneth is back to work finishing the renovations so we will hopefully have the honey house ready for the fall honey harvest.
All this to say, writing fell by the wayside but I’m hoping to pick it back up this fall!
Thanks,
Sarah
